Diabetes Awareness
What is Diabetes
Diabetes is a chronic health condition affecting how your body turns food into energy. According to the American Diabetes Association (ADA), diabetes is one of the leading health issues in the United States, impacting millions of people. Diabetes can increase the risk of severe health complications if left untreated, including heart disease, vision loss, and kidney disease. Uncas Health District is committed to providing resources, education, and support to help manage and prevent diabetes within our community.
Understanding Diabetes
Diabetes occurs when there’s too much glucose (sugar) in the blood. Insulin, a hormone made by the pancreas, helps regulate blood sugar levels. For individuals with diabetes, the body either doesn’t make enough insulin or doesn’t use it effectively. There are three primary types of diabetes:
- Type 1 Diabetes: An autoimmune condition where the body doesn’t produce insulin.
- Type 2 Diabetes: The most common form, where the body doesn’t use insulin properly, often related to lifestyle and genetic factors.
- Gestational Diabetes: A type of diabetes that can develop during pregnancy in women who didn’t previously have diabetes.
Prevention and Management
While Type 1 diabetes is not preventable, Type 2 diabetes can often be managed or even prevented with lifestyle changes. The ADA recommends a few key steps for reducing the risk:
- Healthy Eating: A balanced diet rich in whole grains, fruits, and vegetables can help maintain healthy blood sugar levels.
- Regular Physical Activity: Staying active helps the body use insulin more effectively.
- Routine Screenings: Regular blood sugar screenings are essential, especially for those with a family history of diabetes or other risk factors.
Living with Diabetes
Managing diabetes is about balancing food, activity, and medications to control blood sugar levels. The ADA offers various resources, including guidance on healthy recipes, exercise tips, and coping strategies for emotional well-being. Uncas Health District partners with local healthcare providers to offer free or low-cost screenings, educational programs, and support groups to assist community members in living well with diabetes.
