About The Uncas Health District
The Uncas Health District serves as the local health department for eleven municipalities in Eastern Connecticut. Formed in 1988, the district works to promote and protect the public’s health through environmental health services, health education and prevention, and public health preparedness. The Uncas Health District operates as an independent, non-profit organization under Connecticut General Statutes.
Our work supports residents, businesses, schools, community organizations, and municipal partners across the region. From inspections and licensing to disease prevention, emergency preparedness, and community health initiatives, UHD helps provide the public health infrastructure that keeps local communities safe, informed, and prepared.
What We Do
The Uncas Health District is responsible for a broad range of local public health services, including environmental health inspections, infectious disease monitoring and follow-up, health outreach, education programs, and robust public health emergency preparedness. The district’s mission is to help prevent illness, death, and disability while supporting healthier communities throughout Eastern Connecticut.
Uncas Health District operations are supported by local and state per-capita contributions, grants, and fees. These funding sources allow the district to provide essential services, respond to emerging public health needs, and maintain ongoing programs for the communities it serves.

Who We Are
The governance of the Uncas Health District is facilitated by the UHD Board of Health. Members of this board are appointed by the board of selectmen or other relevant legislative bodies, such as the city council. The representation is municipality-based, ensuring diverse perspectives from each area served by the Uncas Health District. The number of representatives from each municipality is determined by population size. Municipalities with a population exceeding 10,000 become eligible for additional representatives, with a cap at five (5) representatives per municipality. This ensures proportional representation and effective governance.
The Uncas Health District sustains its operations through various funding sources. These include local and state per capita contributions, grants, and fees. Understanding the agency's financial foundation provides insights into its operational capabilities and sustainability.
